The "Heini Holzer" via ferrata on Mount Ivigna at Merano 2000 provides a perfect opportunity for an unforgettable experience in the outdoors. The panoramic views from along the route through Merano 2000 of the Dolomites and the Texelgruppe Nature Park, are spectacular and breathtakingly beautiful. The route involves a fantastic climb through nature, enabling you to appreciate the world of the mountains to the fullest. It is not unusual to meet marmots and chamois along the way, or to discover edelweiss growing by the side of the road. The geology of the area is particularly interesting, as Mount Ivigna lies directly on the periadriatic fault. This is the most important tectonic fault line in the Alps, characterized by a unique juxtaposition of white granite and red porphyry stone.
Due to the nature of the new via ferrata, the climb can be a bit of an adventure for less experienced mountaineers as well as mountaineering families with children who like walking and climbing. The minimum recommended height is 1.50 m.
Climbing the via ferrata is undertaken at your own risk. While on the mountain, everyone is responsible for themselves. A full set of equipment (a via ferrata set and helmet) is mandatory. Because the ascent is southward, it is recommended to set off early and to take sufficient water supplies.
Via ferrata basic information:
- Route length: 1 km
- Altitude: 550 m
- Difficulty level: medium - Levels A-B with sections at B/C
- Time required: 2-4 hours
From Piffinger Köpfl mountain restaurant, follow path No. 3 until you reach a fork in the road, which branches off to the left onto route No. 18, the "Schartlweg" trail, and then continue to the signposted entrance to the via ferrata.
After exiting the via ferrata, you will reach a junction which leads to the bigger Mount Ivigna (at 2,581 m – a further short climb is required to reach the summit, difficulty level B/C) or an easier ascent to the smaller Mount Ivigna (at 2,552 m). From here, the descent begins, leading past Kuhleitenhütte mountain hut, which is clearly visible from above, and downward to ropeway mountain station or the Falzeben Gondola valley station.
From the entrance of the via ferrata it takes approx. 1 h. 30 min. to reach the Piffinger Köpfl mountain station, with a 500 m difference in altitude.
Rental set via ferrata
It is possible to rent the set for the Via Ferrata at Stricker-Shop at the mountain station or at Sportler Alpin (Portici 60) in Merano.
